I have been working as a research analyst responsible for the Big Data topics for the last year. I plan to regularly post my blogs here. I have been accused of being an insufferable and recovering dataholic since my days at Oracle in the early 1990s. So, my goal is to write about all things data.
However, for my first blog, I thought of writing a paean to my admiration for data. I am often asked if I like my new job at Gartner and I have to correct people because the word “job” just doesn’t seem a befitting way to describe what I do. You see, I write research documents, help my clients through inquiries and present at various events. However, each document that I have written is really a love letter to that topic. Each client and vendor I have interacted with is the beginning of a lifelong professional relationship. And each colleague I interact with is the beginning of a lifelong friendship.
Like the Big Apple, data is a topic that never sleeps. What was it at last November’s AWS re:Invent conference – 1300 new announcements? On top of that, that there were hundreds or thousands of vendors consuming these changes and announcing their own new offerings. And then some. Imagine my reaction when I had barely familiarized myself with the new AI offering from AWS called SageMaker, when I was asked how it compares with Watson, Einstein and Leonardo! Those of you in the know, know that I am referring to AI offerings from IBM, Saleforce and SAP respectively.
I find the space of Big Data both intellectually stimulating and challenging. I do attract some flak when I mention “Big Data,” because some people want me to define what the term means. Alas, I am not the one to get embroiled in religious battles. I don’t really care if we call it fast data or any other moniker because the fact is that the volume of data we deal with is only increasing, and we need to find effective solutions to manage it. Remember what Shakespeare said, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” So, we better buckle up and get ready for the ride.
One area where I have lagged in is social media and I plan to be more active in this space in 2018. I was at a conference sitting with attendees who had flown from various corners of the world. While I was trying to concentrate on the panel of speakers, the person to my left was taking pictures of slides and tweeting every word. The person to my right was looking up each speaker on LinkedIn and sending them requests to connect. The person in front of me was emailing, while my kids were sending me texts and Snapchats. Somehow the data deluge barely leaves enough oxygen for a social media dopamine fix!
Look forward to blogs spanning big data technologies, advanced analytics, data governance, IoT and blockchain. 2018 is already shaping out to be an interesting year with the EU GDPR coming into effect on May 25, 2018. There is a renewed emphasis on data lakes and reversing the trends that caused them to turn into swamps. The rallying cry is to make onboarding new businesses far more efficient, automated and even self-service. We are done proving the value of the data lakes. Now, it is time to move off the “Vs” and into monetizing the investment in big data. Many of our clients are looking into infrastructure modernization such as microservices, containerization and workload management – both on-premises and in the cloud. IoT is an exciting use case that is coming up in our inquiries at a rapid clip and I am writing about this topic.
