Data Center Power & Cooling is a Mature Science

By Richard Jones | July 22, 2017 | 0 Comments

Occasionally Gartner for Technical Professionals (GTP) clients seek advice on data center environmental issues such as power, cooling and building management. GTP does not actively research these mature topic areas but to help our clients in any way we can, we have found a number of articles and vendor white papers freely available on the Internet that address these topics quite well. Schneider Electric ( has a few good examples of white papers as do other vendors such as Emerson. Although we are not endorsing Schneider Electric, Emerson, or other vendors or their products, we can say that many of their whitepapers on these topic areas are worth reading.
The areas covered by these papers include:

  • Data Center Systems
  • Building Systems
  • Security Systems
  • Process Systems and Machine Control
  • Efficient Home
  • Power Systems

Here is a selection of some Schneider Electric and Emerson whitepapers that may be of interest:

  • Optimize Data Center Cooling with Effective Control Systems
  • The Criticality of Cooling
  • Continuous Metering and Monitoring of PUE in Data Centers
  • Cost, Speed, and Reliability Tradeoffs between N+1 UPS Configurations
  • Guide to using the IEC 61557-12 standard to simplify the setup of an energy measurement plan
  • Defending Against Cyber Threats to Building Management Systems
  • Success strategies for implementing a modern OMS
  • Guide to energy measurement applications and standards
  • Sustainable Energy Efficiency
  • New Industrial Automation System Topologies made possible by the Industrial Internet of Things
  • The Impact of Energy Management on Process Automation Systems
  • Comparing UPS System Design Configurations (search for your topic and then choose document tab)

Note: Vendors can update, add, or remove sample papers listed above at their discretion.
