Now Live! Our Star Rating Calculation Update

Last Updated: May 2021

The Gartner Peer Insights team is pleased to announce an update regarding the star rating calculations on the site.

As of April 22, 2021, the new default star ratings shown across Gartner Peer Insights will be based on all published reviews for a vendor or product, with reviews older than 12 months progressively weighted less (decrease by half each year).

There are a number of benefits around this update, including:

  • Site traffic: This new display will increase site traffic, as we will now be surfacing all-time total review counts in organic search results.
  • End-user value: This new calculation is consistent with end-user feedback – Aggregate rating data based on all review data available, but newer reviews have the most impact.
  • Vendor site presence: Vendor and product pages will now show all-time total review counts, and older reviews will no longer be hidden/excluded by default.
  • Best practice: This update aligns Gartner Peer Insights with a common practice across other industry leading ratings and reviews platforms.

Previously, the default rating and review counts on the site were based solely on the previous 12 months, with a filter for “Reviewed in last 12 months” enabled by default. As a result of this update the filter will now be off by default, while users who wish to focus on the past 12 months of review data will still be able to do so by manually enabling the filter.

We remain committed to full transparency regarding the site experience and display, and will continue to provide updates regarding any other similar changes in the future.
