Of Baseball, 3D Printed Hands and You

Hailey Dawson’s pitch won World Series viewers’ hearts. But there is more.

To me, the most exciting aspect of 3D printing is medical devices — prosthetics and implants. 3D printed medical devices are truly life altering. And a mechanical hand such as 7 year old Hailey’s prosthetic can cost as little at $25 in materials so why should children go lacking one?


Traditional prosthetics for young people are too expensive to begin with — and they outgrow them. Yet, a prosthetic can help a young person develop at a pace near to their peers’ development. This is where 3D printing comes in.

Hailey was born with Poland Syndrome, which left her missing three fingers on her right hand.

Hailey’s 3D printed prosthetic was created by a team at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

Young Hailey threw the ceremonial first pitch of Game 4 between the Houston Astros and LA Dodgers with her mechanical hand. She is on a 30 ballpark tour, throwing the first pitch for every Major League Baseball team.

Don’t have a 3D printer? No problem. Your local public library, high school or maker space likely has one that you can borrow. While not for use by a specific person, I used our public library’s MakerBot to print an e-Nable mechanical hand design for less than $5.00 including hardware.

3D printing of aerospace parts, consumer goods, military hardware and more happens every day.
