Privately contemplating private cloud

by Michael Warrilow  |  July 12, 2013  |  Comments Off on Privately contemplating private cloud

As much of the Northern Hemisphere enjoys summer, I sit here (quite jealous in a cold Sydney office!) contemplating the future or virtualization and private cloud. To assist me in this endeavour, I’ve called upon the collective knowledge of fellow Gartner analysts including Kyle Hilgendorf, Allesandro Perilli, Tom Bittman, and Joe Skorupa among others. The topics have been varied … because private cloud intersects with a range of emerging technologies including cloud management platforms (CMP), software defined networking (SDN) and hybrid IaasS as well as some classics.

During this process some of the questions I’ve been asked, or have asked myself include:

  • What makes private cloud different from virtualisation? From service management?
  • What if private cloud becomes too hard?
  • How does hybrid fit in?
  • Who are the leaders in private cloud? Why?

It’s been a rewarding and stimulating journey so far, and I’ve learnt quite a few things.

One of the points that became clear to me is that private cloud ‘is not a thing’ [as Tom Bittman said].

Private cloud is a style of service delivery, with all the implications that come along with that. As a result, there’s overlaps — and differences — to existing approaches to enterprise service management. The starting point for my journey was a note called ‘Will private cloud increase by 2015?‘, which lead to an invite to host a Gartner webinar.

The webinar details are below, and you can sign up for free.

Title: ‘Virtualization and Private Cloud: 2013-2015+’

Date: 31 July 8AM EDT and again at 11AM EDT

 I hope you can attend.
