As we move forward into an entirely new business environment in Q2 2020 shaped by COVID-19, let’s take a quick look back at the top ten Gartner client topics for emerging technologies in Q1. As I mentioned late last year in my post on top ten client topics for 2019, Gartner has created an Emerging Technologies and Trends (ETT) focused research agenda designed to help our Technology & Service Provider (TSP) clients improve their offerings.
You will notice some changes in the top topics from what we saw in 2019. These changes reflect the rise in our clients concerns regarding the necessary response to COVID-19 related business impacts – see figure below. The list of topics is derived from client inquiry calls that our ETT analysts have fielded during Q1 2020. Over that time period, our analyst team addressed over 670 separate client inquiries. Also, please note that these client inquiries may have addressed multiple topics.
Interestingly, integrated risk management (IRM) topped the list as a result of increasing interest in business continuity, environment, health & safety (EH&S) and third-party risk management. These are all areas critical to effective response to COVID-19 business interruption. In addition, video analytics related to facial recognition, physical and operational technology (OT) security all point to a need for greater visibility of health related risks associated with the spreading virus.
We are also seeing increased interest in the wider adoption of digital technologies to support an employee base that is now physically separate due to stay-at-home mandates across the globe. Technologies such as network traffic analysis (NTA), digital risk management (DRM), secure access service edge (SASE) and zero trust network access (ZTNA) are emerging as critical needs in this new working environment.
To learn more about the trends driving the use of these emerging technologies, read Gartner’s 2020 Strategic Technology Trends for Product Leaders report (Gartner subscription required). Also, we will be publishing more of our emerging technologies research and updated technology market forecasts in the very near future. Outlooks for technology use are rapidly changing due to the evolving COVID-19 crisis. Stay safe and healthy!
