What I love about Laurel and Hardy is that they are two of these extremely seldom silent movie stars that had found their voice by the end of the 20’s when the silent movie finally had had its day. “Talkies” required a new quality of people. Now, I believe that with cloud computing and operation automation (let’s call it “DevOps”, although this is not a 100% fit), we are standing in front of one of the biggest landmark changes since the invention of the PC and I have the first client inquiries asking me whether firms would need new people to put the new paradigms into practice or how to re-write the job-description of the loyal fellows to sort of force fit-them into the new world.
I am not sure about how fast and if humans have changed into being more adaptive than they had been in the past. Watching an 11yo and a 6yo using a tablet, it is clear to me that the 6yo is already more literate than the 11yo although we probably would estimate that they are still in a fairly similar age of acquisition.
And then, besides the people, there is the firm. There is the fact that there is not a huge management body of knowledge as to how to integrate the DevOps paradigm with a traditional management structure. –Is Matrix Management a better backdrop for a successful DevOps implementation than traditional management structures with team leaders and so on? And then, what happens if you need to implement this in sectors that have traditionally strong hierarchic structures and where people are used to get clear unambiguous supervision?
Clearly, it is not only the people here who need to find “their voice” but also firms, Managers and MBAs.
