“So, What Are You Going to Be for Halloween?” by Mike Guay

I was with my grandkids this past weekend and the subject of Halloween came up. I asked each of them what they were going to be for Halloween and got several standard responses: “a Snow Fairy”, “Spiderman”, “a Ballerina”… it’s fun reliving this with my grandkids.

Years ago I was an executive at a consulting firm and we were working on an implementation project which crossed Halloween day. The CEO of the company (he was a high tech engineer with a Masters from MIT) was a big fan of dressing up for the day. It was a company rule that you had to come to work in costume or use a PTO day to stay home. Seriously. Several days before, the client sponsor approached me and told me the rule applied to everyone…the consultants had to dress up that day or stay out of the office. I was stunned. New one for me.

So everyone figured out something to wear. One of my senior consultants came in with an impressive array of arrows, knives, fake wounds, etc. all over.  When asked what he was, he replied “an ERP implementation project”.

Very funny. All for a holiday invented by dentists with a twisted sense of humor.  Oh, I know, there are all sorts of stories about the origins of Halloween. All false. It was invented to keep kids awake all night after ingesting sugar – hence the twisted sense of humor.  Followed by guaranteed trips to the dentist as said children consumed prodigious amount of candy during the ensuing weeks. It’s all a plot.

But I hope everyone has a great holiday!  Just stay away from those ERP implementations for a day or two…
