Recently, Gartner was honored with the ‘Outstanding Employer Contribution’ award for our involvement with St. Mary’s University Be Smart Project, which focuses on increasing the number of and retaining BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) university students in the UK.

In the spring of 2020, Gartner’s Hannah Reid, Senior Director, HR Consulting, initiated our involvement with the program, which resulted in several BAME students from St Mary’s University joining our consulting business as interns. The group got first-hand experience working for a global organization, which will help in their professional development and potential placement for post-graduation roles.

Hannah hosted a series of webinars open to all students at St Mary’s University. The webinar series covered an array of professional development topics including resume writing, networking, interview techniques and the power of personal branding. Members of the Gartner team had the opportunity to mentor the students one-on-one, where they discussed professional development, goal setting and general career advice.

Hannah’s dedication to the partnership was instrumental in Gartner being recognized as an organization that is working to break down barriers and increase exposure for minority students who are interested in exploring the corporate world.

“I am thrilled to have been a part of this important program and to see the impact this has had on our interns and those students who participated in the webinar series. The disproportionate drop out rate for BAME university students in the UK has a direct correlation to the challenges we subsequently face with diversity in the labor market. These students now have life-long contacts at Gartner and our involvement can hopefully inspire more students to get involved,” says Hannah.

We’re looking forward to welcoming a new group of students to Gartner in January 2021 in partnership with St. Mary’s. As we continue to expand and create more career opportunities for students and recent graduates, we continue to build upon our commitment to inclusion. Learn more here.
