A career in market research can seem challenging, but it’s a job like any other. All it takes is breaking down your goals into specific tasks that you can execute. Want to know more? Read about the journey of Jaipal Singh, Senior Market Research Specialist in Gurgaon, India.
I started my journey as an intern with Gartner in the summer of 2015. Back then, Gartner India Research & Advisory was a small team of 100 associates operating out of the Gurgaon office. It now has now grown to more than 3,000 employees across India, ready to become India’s Center of Excellence.
I was part of the first batch of interns hired to work with the Secondary Research Support team and was offered a pre-placement offer after two months of the internship program. Between then and now, I have seen exponential growth in my knowledge and learning. I firmly believe Gartner provides a great platform and learning environment with an amazing work-life balance for all its associates.
Succeeding in Market Research
Pulling the right insight: An insight or knowledge is polished data that may be of some value to your audience, and the only thing that differentiates any raw data from knowledge is well-implemented research. As a part of the research team, you are exposed to a huge volume of data. Once you get a research request from your audience, you need to learn to figure out the best possible sources where you can find the most relevant data easily and quickly and present it in the form of easily comprehensible insights.
Data quality over quantity: Your performance in any research team thrives on the quality of the deliverables you share with your clients and the impact they can generate. Learn to identify the amount of information that should be enough for your audience to help them make relevant business decisions. Ensure that you never compromise on quality.
Advice to young aspirants
Become a technology enthusiast: No matter whichever team you are being interviewed for; I am sure various aspects of technology will keep crossing your path every day. If you are passionate about the latest technologies and if terms like artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT and cybersecurity entice you, Gartner is the best place for you.
Be ready to learn: When you join Gartner as an intern, no one expects you to be well-versed in the technology domain. The best part of my internship period was that everyone was ready to share their knowledge and learning. Gartner offers its vast IT knowledge for all its associates. This is an amazing opportunity to learn about the latest technologies and their impact on the world.
Ask the right questions: As an intern, you might be asked to work on a variety of projects. Commit to your individual assignments and make sure you deliver your assignments on or before deadlines and as per the expectations. It is important to ask the right questions to clarify your doubts and not hold back until the last minute. You should know what to do, how to do and by when to do.
