Gartner Swim Squad: Raising Funds for Australian Bushfire Victims

At Gartner, we strive to empower and encourage our associates to give back to the communities they live and work in. Whether it’s donating to a charity of their choice, volunteering at a local shelter or participating in community outreach, our associates are continuously giving back. A major part of 2019 saw bushfires ravage lives and resources in Australia. Thousands of hectares of property and innumerable lives were lost in a record-breaking bushfire season. Below, our associates are sharing how they were able to help the local Australian community in a time of crisis.

Alex Falkingham, Vice President, Sales Operations at Gartner, watched news of the devastation with pain. “The reality of the heartbreaking nature of the situation became even harder to watch in a smoke-covered Sydney,” he said. Thus, the idea of Gartner Swim Squad was born. Feeling helpless at the situation, Alex was inspired by the opportunity to spend some time with friends and colleagues from Gartner to do something, no matter how small, to help families and communities affected by the fires. They decided to raise much-needed funds for the Australian Red Cross.

Alex and his team of colleagues at Gartner – Adam Garrett, Keith Whitaker and Paul Simkiss – formed the Gartner Swim Squad and signed up for Cole Classic Ocean Swim, one of the classic swimming event in Australia, which encourages swimmers and athletes to participate in a community event. They work toward donating to charity and helping the country get back on its feet.

Through the internal Gartner Charity Match Program, several teams and associates are helping the communities hurt by the bushfires. Together they have raised around $4,500 and are aiming to raise close to $6,000. Several of our associates in Australia are looking to join the Swim Squad and take part in the next swim to help achieve this goal.
