Whether it’s your first day in a new role or you are preparing to move into leadership, you have access to limitless growth opportunities as a Gartner associate. How far you go is up to you.
Below, Rhonda Scales-Thacker, VP of Software Engineering, Finance Technology, shares her story and offers career advice for others looking to grow with Gartner.
Rhonda’s Career Story
Prior to joining Gartner, I spent several years at a global company serving in both finance and IT leadership roles, where I was able expand my knowledge base and develop into a well-rounded leader.
After spending 10-plus years at the same organization, I decided it was time to make the leap into something new. Although it was intimidating to leave my comfortable day-to-day, I felt Gartner was the right fit for me after my very first interview.
I started my career at Gartner in August 2017 in the IT Product Delivery organization where I had the opportunity to work with a great team on several amazing projects. In April 2019, I led the massive effort of migrating gartner.com onto the cloud, with zero downtime! I’ve also worked on many projects aiming to improve cost-saving efforts – a prime example of how much you can accomplish here at Gartner
In September 2019 I had the opportunity to transition into my current role as VP, Finance Technology. This role has allowed me to return to my passion of supporting finance leaders to ensure they have the best technology in place to run their organization, which is a perfect blend of my prior experiences within the industry and what I’ve learned at Gartner. If someone had told me when I first started that I would have the opportunity to return to my Finance roots and lead the Finance Technology organization, I would never have believed it — but that’s just the type of growth that’s possible here.
What do I love about Gartner? The unique culture. I get to work with a focused group of exceptionally talented individuals, who motivate me to work harder every day. One of the things that I appreciate the most is the professionalism that permeates throughout the buildings on a day-to-day basis.
Rhonda’s Career Advice
Continuously Improve: Take one day at a time and make sure that you are making every second count. Rome was not built in a day, so you aren’t expected to master your craft overnight. However, you should make sure that you are using every moment to improve what you bring to the table.
Keep Learning: Be a lifelong learner! Leverage your peers and managers to elevate yourself, as they are the best on-the-job trainers you can have.
Go for It: Preparation and motivation are half the battle. The most important aspect is taking the risk and not being afraid to put yourself out there for an opportunity. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but the reward of going for it can be as pleasing as “getting it.”
