Are you interested in taking the next step in your career? The Gartner team is growing and looking to hire talented professionals in several of our local offices. Below, Andrew Watson, a Manager on our Content Production team, shares his three tips for career success at Gartner.
1. Slow down and listen up. When you work for a larger organization like Gartner, you are meeting and working with people from different personal and professional backgrounds. It’s important to make time to listen. Some folks may be coming from small companies run more like startups. Others may be steeped in a traditional, enterprise way of doing things. Others may be completely new to the company (or to corporate life altogether). Create a safe environment where everyone’s perspectives, aspirations and concerns can be freely shared, without fear and free from distraction. Cut yourself some slack, too: Admit that you can’t see the future or have all the answers. But you can listen, acknowledge and work together to forge a solution.
2. Delegate responsibility with gusto. No matter your role, collaborating and working effectively with others will lead to success, especially if you feel as though 2019 may be heralded as the “Year of Infinite Projects.” Speaking as a manager, I’m more effective when I entrust those projects to skilled members of my team. Not only do I have more time to focus on Gartner’s priorities, but my team’s capabilities grow from tackling new challenges. The mantra “many hands lighten the load” is as true today as ever. We have the right processes, technologies and best practices to handle whatever the next stage of growth entails. Use those tools and your team’s collective abilities to get it done right.
3. Have a little fun. Working on a team can be challenging—which is why it’s important to keep things fun, too. Laughing about a movie, taking time to share personal stories . . . these small moments build team trust and camaraderie. Keep meetings focused, but light. Detour from the agenda once in a while to share something fun and even personal. Create an environment where your team members feel confident reaching their own goals as they grow with Gartner.
