Gartner Finance comprises many different divisions, including the Product Finance team. As part of that team, my biggest responsibility is to create the budgets and forecasts for specific business units and to track how they are performing comparatively. While this might sound a little boring, it is actually very interesting. As part of my role, I get to collaborate with senior leaders of our organization and help them bring their visions and goals to life. Gartner is constantly changing and growing, so there is always something new.

Our schedule is structured such that the first two weeks of each month are pretty busy. We provide various reporting to our specific business units, which helps them see how Gartner is performing and spot areas of achievement and improvement. In addition, we meet with the rest of Gartner Finance to review the monthly results and provide more detail around the financials. This allows our Corporate Finance Team to understand the trends we are seeing and estimate what the impacts will be for the remainder of the year.

photo-finance-chartOnce monthly reporting is complete, our attention shifts to the most recent forecast or budget. Depending on the time of year, we are either creating new versions or looking to see the impact of the most recent month and how it will translate to the rest of the year. This is where we collaborate closely with our business units to discuss their plans and their recent progress. As the projects involve collaboration with other areas of Gartner, I need to make sure I am in sync not only with our specific business units but with the finance colleagues of the other business units — this takes a good portion of the time. In addition to the budget and forecast impact, we focus on expanding and enhancing our current reporting. As Gartner continues to grow, we need to make sure that our reporting grows with it, and by flexing our creativity, we are able to provide new insights for the business units.

It is an exciting time to be part of Gartner and especially to be part of Gartner Finance. In a growing environment, there is always something new and exciting to tackle. My job uniquely places me to see not only the financial aspect but also how those financials translate into helping Gartner and our clients become successful. This is truly a “win as a team” environment, and I am excited to see what we can achieve in 2019 and beyond.
