Jill Brunori Shares Why She Joined Gartner’s Sales Team

My name is Jill Brunori. Growing up, I was extremely passionate about everything I did, especially when it came to sports. I received a full ride to play basketball at Wake Forest University, and had dreams of continuing my basketball career after college. Unfortunately, five knee surgeries later, that dream was crushed.

At first, changing my plans and refocusing my energies were challenging when basketball ended. But I quickly realized that everything I loved about basketball could still apply elsewhere, if I was just willing to make a slight adjustment to my perspective. I could incorporate the aspects I loved about sports into a career — the competitive aspect, the team environment, and the ability to see results through hard work and practice.

I decided to go back and receive my master’s degree in management from Wake Forest Business School to figure out what I wanted to do next. Throughout my time there, I initially thought I was set on working in sports. I’d spent my whole life up until this point connected to sports, and I was convinced it was going to be my career path. However, I found myself pursuing other opportunities, drawn more to the culture of the company or the opportunity it presented. I wanted a job that related to the skillset utilized in sports, but at the same time, I needed a company that homed in on a teamwork environment with a surplus of growth opportunities. That is exactly why I chose Gartner.

I chose Gartner for several different reasons. First and foremost: the culture. In grad school, I was in the middle of interviewing for several companies. My first interview with Gartner was seemingly normal. It was a 45-minute conversation discussing what Gartner is, why Sales, and typical behavioral interview questions. I assumed at the end of the interview I would figure out next steps or be told I would hear from them within a number of weeks, but what happened next shocked me.

My recruiter stopped at the end of the call and took the last 10 minutes to give me immediate feedback. He told me where my strengths were, but more importantly, what I needed to work on before the next interview. This process continued throughout every single interview I had with Gartner. It was the only company that took the time to invest in me and to coach me, for no other reason other than that they wanted me to be successful.

If they were this passionate about people they were simply recruiting to work at Gartner, I could only imagine how they treated actual employees. Being roughly half a year into the job, I can say the culture and the people are exactly why I took this job. I have been blown away by the training and commitment shown every single day. I wake up each morning knowing that I am passionate about what I get to do. But I’m even more committed because I am surrounded by successful, hardworking, compassionate people willing to help me grow every step of the way.

The second reason I chose Gartner was because of the immense opportunity for growth. I have plans to perhaps work overseas or to move closer to family at some point. Knowing that Gartner has a global presence in over 100 countries and understanding the significant growth the company has been experiencing helps me understand that my options are endless.

I could not have asked for a better first job coming out of school or a better opportunity. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of this company, and I cannot wait to see what the future has to offer.
