Sharif Nesheiwat Shares His Growing With Gartner Story

December 05, 2018

sharif 2Meet Sharif Nesheiwat, the Deputy Ethics and Compliance Officer working in our Stamford office. Sharif shares the story of his unique career path as well as how he joined the Gartner team below.

I grew up just outside of New York City living in a modest home with lots of extended family who had recently immigrated to the United States from Jordan. As a child, I learned English watching “Sesame Street,” “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” and “Looney Tunes.” While at university, I was deeply influenced by the events of September 11, 2001, and chose a path of public service through a career in law enforcement — ultimately becoming a prosecuting trial lawyer. In my career, I have worked for the JAG at West Point, three District Attorney’s Offices in New York, the Department of Homeland Security as a national security trial attorney, and an in-house counsel to the Joint Terrorism Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations. I am proud to have tried over a thousand matters to verdict or judicial order and am fortunate to have never lost a solo jury trial. I left the public sector for a position in-house at HSBC as a senior legal advisor in the financial crimes group. While there, I was appointed as an Administrative Law Judge and adjudicated roughly 700 matters in Executive Agency actions. At the time of my judicial appointment, I was the youngest judge in federal service and the youngest appointed pursuant to the Administrative Procedure Act.

I learned about Gartner after reading a LinkedIn feed from my Columbia classmate, Billy Carey (MVP, Events Global Sales). I was attracted to Gartner by the prospect of working for a company with a sterling reputation for ethics and integrity, and I was won over by the shared vision of respected leaders Nancy Erskine (GVP, Ethics and Integrity) and Jules Kaufman (EVP, General Counsel) in evolving their compliance program to best in class. What I have come to love about Gartner is the amazing culture — how it fosters an incredible team dynamic and promotes leadership— especially as my team works collaboratively on matters impacting Gartner around the globe. Contributing to our legal and compliance department’s efforts to support the mission-critical priorities of all the global BUs during our company’s unprecedented growth has brought exciting challenges and opportunity that our whole team embraces. As a Gartner lawyer and compliance officer, each day brings a chance to both add value and ensure Gartner remains the world’s pre-eminent ethical research and advisory firm for generations to come. I am driven by our company ethos and humbled by this great responsibility.
