Having joined Gartner in September 2015, Ryan Marks, an Event Sponsorship Sales Recruiter, shares his experiences working in several of our global offices during his three year career.

Life at Gartner perhaps means different things for different people, but we can all agree that #LifeAtGartner means collaborating with the smartest coworkers around, growing leaps and bounds through challenging, yet meaningful work and great benefits like PTO aplenty.

For me, though, life at Gartner has brought me a rather unique opportunity, and I am so thankful for it — a smooth and pain-free transition moving from one end of the world to another. Specifically, in October 2017, Gartner helped me relocate from Tokyo, Japan, to Dallas, Texas.

I joined Gartner in September 2015 based in Tokyo as a recruiter. Gartner Japan is a smaller (but still very profitable!) operation compared to America or EMEA, so it was a great chance for me to learn about and understand each business unit that the company represents while making impactful hires to move the business forward. Indeed, Gartner Japan is like a microcosm of everything Gartner has to offer, as research, events, consulting and everything in between are all under one roof in Japan. It was a time of accelerated learning, growing and performance for me surrounded by some of the hardest-working yet kindest people I had ever met.

After two years at Gartner in Tokyo (and nine years total in the beautiful country of Japan), I was ready to be closer to my family, while my wife was ready to study English. I had kept a keen eye on our internal job postings, and when I found opportunities in Dallas, TX, I knew I had to find out more. While Stamford and Fort Myers seemed appealing as well, I had never heard of Gartner having a big presence in Dallas. After speaking in detail with Shaun Carroll and Rebecca Goncalves, two of my closest mentors internally, Dallas seemed like the place for me.

I put my hand up, applied for the role and, a mere two months or so later, I found myself living in Dallas, TX, with an amazing opportunity lined up in front of me. Who would have thought a relocation from Tokyo to Dallas could have been so easy? This was the biggest change I had ever made in my life (except maybe moving to Japan in the first place!) and thanks to Gartner, it was quick, efficient and so smooth. I will always be thankful to Gartner for that!
