Aksel Gursel_75171Name: Aksel Gursel

Job Title: Events Attendance Specialist

University: Bournemouth University

Office Location: Egham, U.K.

Describe your job in 25 words or less: Establishing business relationships with C-level executives offering technology-related insight based on their key initiatives through the Gartner Events portfolio.

What originally attracted you to Gartner? If I am being completely honest Jenna Alexander (Associate Director, Recruiting) has had the biggest impact on my professional career to date — I thought if it’s good enough for her, it certainly will be for me. But just the brand, values, progression on offer is exactly where I wanted to begin my professional career post-university.

What is your favorite part about working for Gartner? The constant pressure to perform and work with C-level professionals in some of the biggest global organizations in the world.

How has Gartner helped you in your career development? The fact I have only been here 8 months and can answer this question says everything you need to know about Gartner. From a professional level they give you every single tool you need to speak to C-level individuals, but from a personal development perspective, I have learned so much about myself.

What are 3 words that best describe Gartner? Rewarding, exciting and challenging.

What has been your proudest moment at Gartner? Being at the top of the leaderboard month on month since the start of the year. I am obsessed with not getting caught.

Team PhotoWhat advice would you give to recent new hires? Have an open mind, be ready to work hard and listen to what you are being taught — TRUST ME, IT WORKS.

If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why? So many to pick from, but I would have to go with Sir Alex Ferguson — recognized as one of the best leaders in the world. I would just love to be in his presence, let alone interview him. Second choice would be Conor McGregor.

What is one thing unique about you that people would be surprised if they knew? This will certainly shock some people in the events team but I am actually a Freemason (before anyone says I have broken the first rule of Freemasonry, I haven’t. It’s not a secret to be one) I would say that’s pretty unique.

If you could switch your job with anyone else within Gartner whose job would you want and why? Chris Parry, my VP. One day I dream of being in a position like him — running one of the most successful business units and regions (no, he did not pay me to say that).

Favorite Quote or Personal Mantra: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” —Steve Jobs or my classic saying at work, “The same water that makes the egg hard, makes the pasta soft.” Take what you want from that
