Get To Know Gartner: Meet Lucy Magri-Overend

LMOName: Lucy Magri-Overend

Job Title: Event Attendance Specialist

Office Location: Egham, U.K.

Describe your job in 25 words or less: I drive paid attendance to events, often through creating a learning & development solution that supports IT strategy and personal development goals in tandem.

What is your favorite part about working for Gartner? The people, without a doubt. Gartner is packed with inspiring, driven and diverse characters. Everyone wants everyone to succeed, no matter what their role or remit; our goals are created to benefit everyone and hence reinforce this. The Events business unit specifically is encouraged to hire young talent and there is a constant buzz on the floor. The people make it a really positive and supportive environment to work in.

What are 3 words that best describe Gartner? Trustworthy, collaborative, crème-de-la-crème (hope that counts!)

What has been your proudest moment at Gartner? Closing the largest deal within EAS in Europe last year knowing that the client was really pleased and believed in the solution they invested in.

What are 3 career lessons you’ve learned while at Gartner?

  1. Personal brand matters
  2. Tasks are either mandatory, high leverage or low leverage. Learn what ‘leverage’ means to your role — to me it means revenue-generating x urgency — learn which category tasks fall into and prioritize accordingly. On from this, it is better to do a good job and complete all your tasks than do a great job on some of your tasks but not complete your to-do list
  3. Additional tasks that are often seen as extra work are the development opportunities that will differentiate you from your peers

TeamWhat advice would you give to recent new hires? Use your time in Academy (training) wisely — you are only new once. Ask every ‘silly’ question that comes to mind, and make sure you understand the answers you’re given! Be a positive nuisance to the rest of the team and build relationships both in and out of your business unit.

If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why? Margaret Zhang — Unapologetically herself. Incredibly hardworking. Massively influential. I’d love to understand where her drive comes from, how she chooses what to sacrifice vs. what not to sacrifice for the love of her work, how she remains original and where her inspiration comes from. I’d also like to be her friend!

What are 3 words that best describe you? Perceptive, honest, tenacious

What is one thing unique about you that people would be surprised if they knew? I used to powerlift and at one point could deadlift 135kg!. I love calligraphy and have a small leather-bound book that I write/design phrases/mantras in when they catch my eye.

Favorite Quote or Personal Mantra: “How much a human life is wasted simply by waiting for a better day to come” and “Accept what you can’t change, change what you can’t accept”
