Job Title: Commercial Director
Office Location: London, U.K.
Describe your team in 25 words or less: My team is driven, ambitious, energetic and keen to do well. They’re incredibly collaborative. We work hard but also make the most of building friendships within the team.
Why did you choose Gartner? I wasn’t actually planning on working here! I had taken a break from my career to travel, and on my return was set on moving back to Bristol. A friend of mine worked at Gartner and suggested I interview; frankly, I wasn’t keen, but she convinced me to come in. My mindset totally changed as soon as I started meeting senior leadership and the people within the business; they were smart and driven. I haven’t looked back since!
What was your first role at Gartner? Initially I joined as an Account Manager for the EMEA Legal business, managing around 90 accounts. Along with the Business Development Manager, we grew the business through building a network, using cross-company references and making a name for ourselves in the market. I then moved into a hybrid role with new and existing business, but just for the U.K. I now run the practice, and it’s grown to seven individual contributors for EMEA.
How long have you worked at Gartner? 4 years.
What makes Gartner a great place to work? The people. Everyone at Gartner contributes to making it a great environment to work in, as well as to grow and succeed. There is so much talent within the business, but more than that, there is a real sense of people wanting to work together and support each other to reach outcomes. The work we do every day is incredibly rewarding in itself, but it’s the successes that we have together as a team and a company that makes it so special.
Describe your best employee. What unique qualities does he/she possess that makes them stand out? This person is very self-motivated and driven to achieve results. They go out of their way and won’t rest until they know they’ve done everything they can to get to an outcome. They own their business 100%, and get to their desired outcomes as a result.
When interviewing a candidate, what are 3 things you look for? I look for drive and determination, an openness to learn and high levels of business acumen. Someone who can see the wider picture.
Share a success story about your team: One of my team members recently sold the largest deal globally for the Legal practice. This person was still very new to the role, but determined and keen to try something new. This really shows others that it can be done so they’re not afraid to fail.
Describe your management style: Supportive but enabling.
What role does your team play in Gartner’s success? We’ve launched new products this year, and Legal is one of them. My team was the first to sell the new product in Europe, and we’ve really paved the way in opening up the business to new opportunities, and showing others how to adapt to this new product.
If you could describe your team dynamic in one word, what would it be? Collaborative
