Job Title: Business Development Manager
Office Location: Fort Myers, FL
Describe your job in 25 words or less: I impact my clients’ growth by acting as a business partner between them and Gartner’s vast network of analysts/research.
What originally attracted you to Gartner? I was attracted to Gartner because I always knew that technology is the ultimate pace-setter and disruptor throughout human history. After learning what Gartner actually did, I could instantly digest the inherent value for its clients to not only grow their business but also change the world.
How has Gartner helped you in your career development? Gartner has given me all of the tools and best practices that our highest achievers have consistently used to achieve their goals. This has allowed me to develop and hone my craft to match Gartner’s highest achievers. Also, having an opportunity to work as a strategic partner with C-level executives on a daily basis has enabled me to expand my business acumen and refine my executive presence. Another area of development that I find extremely valuable is that I am responsible for the entire sales pipeline, from identification and prospecting to proposing, closing and onboarding.
Did you move to Fort Myers for this job? If yes, what was the hardest part and what was the easiest part? I moved from Flint, MI to Gartner after graduating from college. The hardest part was leaving my family because we’re a very tight-knit group and I’d never been farther than a few hours from them. The easiest part was changing into shorts and sandals every day when I got home from the office (even in January).
What are 3 words that best describe Gartner? Innovative, collaborative, dynamic.
What makes your team the best one to join? My team is the best because we all have our unique strengths (both personally and professionally) that we bring together to create an outstanding team culture. The people I work with every day are part of the joy of working at Gartner, and I couldn’t imagine being with a different group.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? I enjoy seeing the results for the prospects’ I’ve identified and signed on as clients. It gives me incredible satisfaction because I know that it was my ability to communicate value combined with our incredible analysts that delivered invaluable insight and results to the clients. There is no better feeling than a client you signed on telling you, “Nate, we couldn’t have done this without Gartner.”
What advice would you give to recent new hires for Sales at Gartner? Invest in yourself and be as coachable as possible. Take every opportunity to role play, practice and learn about Gartner and what we do for our clients. The most successful people I’ve met here own their professional development both inside and outside the office.
If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why? I would interview Teddy Roosevelt because he had a very stoic and efficient approach to his life. I’ve read a couple of his speeches and biographies and would love to pick his brain about his wide experiences from being a cowboy to an explorer and hunter, and of course, President of the United States.
What are 3 words that best describe you? Learner, problem-solver, enthusiastic.
What is one thing unique about you that people would be surprised if they knew? Even though I live in sunny Florida, I play ice hockey 3-4 times a week.
Favorite Quote or Personal Mantra: “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” — Theodore Roosevelt
