University: University of Nottingham
Job Title: Senior Account Executive
Office Location: Egham, U.K.
Describe your job in 25 words or less: Territory management role responsible for introducing data & analytics solution providers to the Gartner end-user client base — C-level business & IT leaders — through a variety of engagement platforms.
What originally attracted you to Gartner? I was attracted to working in the technology space and Gartner is a well-established and highly reputable brand in the industry. As an ambitious graduate, the first-class training and the distinct career path that was available for top achievers was immediately attractive. Finally, the opportunity to work alongside other highly talented driven professionals with a “no-limits mindset.”
How has Gartner helped you in your career development? After university I started working in the technology recruitment space before having the opportunity to move to Gartner. I particularly enjoy the environment here; it is very much that you are rewarded for your achievements and over-achievements. The company is willing to increase responsibility in correlation with activity — which is great! I started off in a new business role 4 years ago and have subsequently had 2 promotions to Account Executive and currently Senior Account Executive. I recently completed the Gartner Management Program and look forward to continuing my growth with Gartner.
What are 3 words that best describe Gartner? Collaboration, leadership and integrity.
What has been your proudest moment at Gartner? There have been many proud moments, from achieving multiple Winners Circles and 300 Club awards to being promoted to a senior member of the team, but without doubt the proudest moments include being part of such a great team, being involved in growing a business and seeing the evolution and results firsthand — to be part of launching new events and growing our data & analytics portfolio to become some of the most successful events globally!
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? The ability to make a real impact, to work in collaboration with enterprise clients who provide cutting-edge technology solutions. We are at the forefront of the industry. Working directly with C-level decision makers to understand their business and to provide them with tangible solutions to support their goals. It is always a great reward to hear the results a client has generated from a collaboration with Gartner and knowing that we were able to make a difference. I am proud to represent such a great company.
What advice would you give to recent new hires? Be open to feedback, the culture at Gartner is great — colleagues and the leadership team are very supportive and provide real-time feedback to support and allow you to constantly improve. Be prepared to go the “extra mile” and be willing to work hard, be ready to embrace new challenges and projects. Don’t be shy about asking questions. Be inquisitive and ready to learn… the rest will follow!
If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why? Richard Branson – I’m not sure how someone runs 400+ companies, and even more perplexing is how Richard Branson seems to be having the time of his life running them! Branson has been like that from day 1, when he started Virgin from scratch back in the early 70’s. He’s been called the definition of success; it’s not necessarily because of his net worth, but because of his positive attitude and pioneering spirit. For me his story and his character are inspiring and I would love to understand more about how he’s done it. I’m not inspired by the billions he’s made but how he has done it — I’m inspired by his childlike joy, ambition, “dare to dream” and his entrepreneurial spirit. Oh, and I hear that he’s launching personal space travel next… he is one person who I feel exemplifies a “no-limits mindset”!
If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it? “Before Fame” — An Autobiography
What are 3 words that best describe you? Driven, collaborative, entrepreneurial.
What is one thing unique about you that people would be surprised if they knew? I’m a great speller and won a spelling competition in primary school…can’t stand misspellings!
I have made extraordinary four-course meals using only a toaster.
Favorite Quote or Personal Mantra: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
