Job Title: Account Executive — Midmarket Financial Services
Office Location: Fort Myers, FL
Describe your job in 25 words or less: Growing and retaining my territory through establishing myself as a business partner to CIOs and IT leaders and aligning Gartner resources that skyrocket the success of their initiatives & business.
What originally attracted you to Gartner? Gartner is a globally renowned organization, not only because it is the global leader in all things IT research and advisory, but because it is known to be a great place to work. Gartner’s brand reflects in all accuracy what they stand for: a place of limitless opportunities. I knew I wanted to belong to an organization where I could lay my roots, evolve as a professional, grow into new roles and experiences, and gain some recognition for my accomplishments along the way. Most importantly, I wanted to invest my career, time and future in an organization that would invest as much in me. From my tireless research and job hunt, I knew Gartner was the place for me. And I am so glad I found this world-class organization! Being a part of this ever-growing organization means I am also ever growing and always evolving. I am encouraged to dream big, work hard, prepare for success and go as far as I want.
Who has been a mentor for you here at Gartner? How have they helped you? Last year, my first few months at Gartner came with the usual dose of jitters, nervousness and a lot of eagerness to hit the ground running. Luckily, Gartner encourages this eagerness and equips us with the most knowledgeable trainers, managers and peers to help us through it all. An opportunity arose within my territory, but I was unsure of how to best make sure this was a win for me. I set my nerves aside and sought the help of then Account Executive Laken Hamilton, who had recently been recognized as a top performer in our region. I filled her in on this opportunity, and so began a partnership that continues to fuel my love for this organization. Laken, who was busy achieving her own big goals, became my mentor and dedicated much of her time to guide me through one of the most uncomfortable periods of my young career in sales. Her confidence in me and her expertise in this role helped me rise as an Account Executive who knows no limits to what I can achieve. That opportunity surely was a win and I crossed off a few personal goals along the way, including being a bonus achiever! The beauty of this is that Laken achieved her own big goals and is was promoted to Area Manager. She was and is invested in my consistent growth, challenges me to think big and never lets my jitters overtake me; I could not be more grateful for that. This year, we are already breaking records, setting new standards and achieving bonuses, so the sky is the limit!
What is your favorite part about working for Gartner in Fort Myers, FL? Location-wise, the proximity to the beach and all sorts of water sports such as kayaking and paddle boarding is a huge perk! When I am not at work, I am usually enjoying time outside with my family, friends and dog.
Another huge perk is the people I am surrounded with! My work peers have become my friends and our culture is not just collaborative, but also fun, so I am never bored and there is always plenty to do with really great people. I love that I consider my work peers friends and can share lots of experiences with them.
How has Gartner helped you in your career development? Beyond the top-of-the-line training and preparation I have gotten to make success inevitable within my role, Gartner has broadened my horizons and expectations as to what is possible. Because of Gartner, I have a newfound confidence in my abilities as a sales professional, which allows me to dream big, go after what I want and feel extremely comfortable in the most uncomfortable of situations. My evolution as a sales professional has given my career an extreme uplift, but Gartner has also given me a new sense of purpose. I now have a clear definition for the future of my career and a plan to get there. Since Gartner encourages us to grow with them, I can communicate my goals to my leaders and they align me with the resources and training I need to get there.
Describe the culture at Gartner: Gartner SMB is known for its exceptional culture. To give you some insight into what this means, we are a group of individuals from all walks of life, coming together to work hard and live life in the best way possible. We are passionate about this organization and what we do, because we know it makes an impact around the globe! We rally around great causes like the Harry Chapin Food Bank and put our minds together toward being exceptional within our roles and beyond. Our culture represents working hard, doing the right things, being good to others both in the community and far away, and celebrating our accomplishments by playing hard!
What makes your team the best one to join? My team, The Fight Club (follow us on Instagram), is full of the most hilarious and hard-working people I have ever come across. Selfless in helping others, encouraging, positive, yet can dish out some serious jokes, so there is never a dull moment in our row. Even though we are a team that loves to laugh, our goal is to be the No. 1 team in SMB. So we hustle! We hold each other accountable to this and know that to be No. 1 we must all be individual contributors to our common goal. Every day is fun, but every day I get closer to being a master of my trade. I owe this to our phenomenal leadership and a team that pushes me to be the best I can be.
What has been your proudest moment at Gartner? In the recent quarterly recognition, I was recognized as the Top Account Executive of the Quarter for new Executive Programs business. This recognition means so much to me because it is the culmination of consistent effort, hard work, fearlessly thinking big and quite simply just going after it! Of course I must also accredit my awesome manager, Laken, for her guidance and the encouragement of my team.
I started 2017 with a hefty goal, and this recognition motivates me to keep going. No good thing will ever come easily and without obstacles, but I value the fact that Gartner takes time to recognize our accomplishments. It is encouraging to see the momentum I have built and that I have the support and of my leaders to keep moving forward.
In addition, this recognition also means that I get the chance to help my peers achieve the same by sharing with them how I did it, things I learned and also encouraging them to just go for it!
If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it? From Snacks to Riches: A Tale of Self Discovery
What are 3 words that best describe you?
What is one thing unique about you that people would be surprised if they knew? I was born in Guatemala and moved to the U.S. when I was 12, so my first language is Spanish. Although I learned English prior to our move (thanks mom!), I have Britney Spears, NSYNC and Shania Twain to thank for my nearly perfect enunciation.
Favorite Quote or Personal Mantra: Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right. — Henry Ford (but also my Area Manager, Laken).
