Recently, a group of enthusiastic associates from the Bangalore office spent part of their busy weekends cleaning up the facilities of the Spastics Society of Karnataka, a nongovernmental organization and school for children with special needs. The school, located on a five-acre campus in Bangalore, provides diagnostic and intervention services for children with special needs and has helped approximately 20,000 children and their families.
A clean India
Driven by a concern for the environment and a strong call from India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who launched an ambitious nationwide. “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” (Clean India Initiative), the Gartner Bangalore team chose to do something for this special school — creating a cleaner and more hygienic environment for the children. most of whom are physically challenged, to play.
Our associates arrived first thing on a Saturday morning and got straight to work. Their goal was to clean and freshen up the grounds to make them feel more welcoming and encouraging for the students when the children returned Monday morning. The group surveyed the school grounds and quickly identified areas that needed attention. Over the next few hours, the associates were seen planning, strategizing and transforming their surroundings into a cleaner and safer place for the children to play and learn.
Brooms buckets and drums
Armed with brooms, buckets and drums to collect waste — and a lot of paint — the associates turned a scrapheap into an area where children could play, and a dump yard into an appealing outdoor activity area. School authorities were so appreciative of the effort that they kept our associate volunteers hydrated in the warm and dry afternoon with a regular supply of water and juice.
“By the end of the day, we were a gratified bunch of passionate associates,” commented Rehana Nisar, Gartner Recruiter. “We all returned home with a sense of deep contentment that those children will smile a little bit extra because of us.”
