Recently, Justin Zandri, Vice President of Brand Strategy & Marketing Services at Gartner in Stamford, CT, USA, took over Gartner’s Snapchat account to promote a day in his life. Below find a few of his snaps and a ton more about what he does on any given day.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up? If we’re being totally honest here, I hit snooze. It’s 9 minutes on the iPhone before my alarm goes off again. At that point I’ll check my email and jump in the shower.
What does your breakfast consist of? Iced coffee with half and half. I make a cup with my fancy Nespresso machine the night before and stick it in the fridge.
Do you eat breakfast? I try not to eat until lunch.
How many people do you manage? Around 50, with 5 direct reports.
What is the first thing you do when you get to work? Turn on Spotify and plan for my day by making a list of the things I need to accomplish. If I don’t have anything pressing, I’ll look at the headlines of the Wall Street Journal and read an article or two.
How does the rest of your morning play out? It all depends what is on my plate. On Tuesday morning I like to spend an hour with the team that leads our Creative Center of Excellence. We work from a jointly developed agenda that typically covers hot topics, operational challenges and workload prioritizations.
Do you do anything special most days? Is there a routine you keep or do you go with the flow? I try not to be a slave to my email inbox. Rather than spend all my time trying to keep up, I prefer to respond to messages in batches as they accumulate in the morning, afternoon and right before I leave.
On a great day, what does your lunch look like? I take a few minutes to sit outside and watch the boats while eating my lunch.
On a typical day, what does your lunch look like? I bring something from the cafeteria back to my office. Luis, who makes the sandwiches, puts even the best sandwich artists to shame!
How do you beat an afternoon energy-slump? Caffeine and a good tune.
Is there a project you have right now that keeps you on your toes? I’m helping to lead the Gartner-CEB brand integration, which is a first for me in the B2B world. I’m lucky to be working with and learning from Michelle Puleio, a new Gartner colleague from CEB.
When are you most energized and about what? Our Creative Center of Excellence team is really starting to hit their stride right now. It is so awesome to see them produce terrific work for our clients and internal team.
Do you have a part of your job that you love? Watching great ideas transform into compelling communications that drive our business.
What is your favorite part of the day? Seeing my family when I get home from work. My daughter Tess is effusive in her affection. Usually I get a massive hug. My son, James, prefers a more low-key fist-bump.
Do you have an after-work routine? When I have some free time, I love the Gartner gym. I usually wear a baseball cap pulled down so no one recognizes the out-of-shape guy gasping for breath.
What do you do in your drive home? Lately I’ve been listening to the S-Town podcast.
How far are you from the office? Hopefully less than an hour.
What does your dinner look like? Most nights I try to get home and eat with my family. My wife is an awesome cook. Even Taco Tuesdays are killer.
How do you wind down at night? Get my kids in bed and watch a show with my wife. Right now we are getting “creeped out” nightly by Black Mirror.
Is there anything work-wise that keeps you up? Hiring great people to join our team. We currently have multiple openings on the design and content teams. Please send in referrals!
What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed? I’m reading Killers of the Flower Moon, by David Mann, about the Osage Indian nation.
