Dawn Shine is a Business Development Director, located in Ireland. She is starting her sixth year with Gartner, and joined the team because she wanted to help people overachieve and overdeliver on their personal and business goals.

Describe your job in 25 words or less: I identify new business opportunities and partnerships in the end-user sector in Ireland, bringing clients tangible, measurable value with Gartner services.

What originally attracted you to Gartner? I knew Gartner was a successful company but I really didn’t realize the amazing knowledge base until I looked under the hood. It’s so exciting as we continue to grow and evolve — I’m learning every single day.

What is your favorite part about working for Gartner? I love helping people by bringing them exciting new ideas to enhance their roles. Developing new relationships is so rewarding, especially when clients tell you that you changed their lives and Gartner has helped them to really deliver measurable value to their businesses.

There is a HR slant to my role as we empower and educate our clients so they can do their jobs quicker, better and learn on the job. I love the challenge of reaching out to new clients and educating them about the value of Gartner — where else would they get access to 1,300 great brains in one place! There is quite a bit of marketing involved, as I’m constantly promoting everything we do. Then the big reward comes when I see them flourish and grow. We transfer our knowledge and they soak it up!

What brings you the most pride in your role at Gartner? When I can create a brand-new territory with clients who never experienced the value of 2Gartner. New territories mean new opportunities for analysts, AEs and the whole team. Clients tell me “Thank you for bringing the powerhouse of Gartner to me. It is truly insightful and has encouraged me to really think about how I can help our organization reach corporate goals through the use of smart technologies and processes. The analysts encouraged me to think about how to be much more innovative and helped me create a business-led talk track rather than leading with technology.”

What advice do you have for prospective Gartner candidates? This is a “business-enabling” career. Yes, you do have to pick up the phone and position our capabilities, just like everybody does who wants to grow, but for me, the rewards and benefits are truly worth it.

What personality traits do you need to be successful at this job? Inquisitiveness, curiosity and the enjoyment of investigation — I feel like a detective sometimes. This role requires you to have a desire to help people, an ability to self-start and the willingness to take ownership of your business.
