U.K. Associates Make a Night of Helping Homeless Young People

Associates from Sales and Research rough it to raise over £6,000 on Byte Night.

Recently, Gartner associates from Sales and Research joined hundreds of others from the technology and business arena for Action for Children‘s annual Byte Night. Byte Night is a national ‘sleep-out’ event benefiting homeless youth. Participants forgo their beds for sleeping bags to spend the night outdoors to raise money and awareness for the cause — and gain some insight into what it’s like for these vulnerable young people. The event took place in 10 cities across the U.K., where it is estimated there are approximately 80,000 homeless youth.

A rough night

Louis Williams, Maite Roel and Alistair Johnson spent the night in St. John’s Churchyard in London and David Groombridge and David Chamberlain slept under the stars in Birmingham’s St. Paul’s Square. Together, they have raised more than £3,000 to date, which will double to more than £6,000 with Gartner Gives, Gartner’s charity match program.

“We slept rough for a night to make a positive difference in these young people’s lives,” said Maite. “We have kids ourselves and we can´t imagine what these young people might be going through to find themselves in this situation.”

“We want our kids to be inspired to give back to the community, and we need to lead by example,” added David Groombridge. “We often forget how privileged we are, and this event helps us to appreciate it. We will be there again next year.”

Tackling homelessness

Action for Children is 145 years old and one of the U.K.’s oldest children’s charities. It supports more than 300,000 children, young people and families every year from over 650 services. Family breakdown, mental health issues and abuse in the home are just a few of the causes that lead to many young people becoming homeless. Action for Children helps tackle the root causes of homelessness, keeping vulnerable young people off the streets and enabling them to build better lives. Byte Night is Action for Children’s biggest fundraiser.
