When considering a move to Florida for an opportunity at Gartner, what attracted you the most?
I have lived in Connecticut my whole life and went to College in New Haven. I never got to experience life outside of CT, with the exception of vacation. I thought it would be a great experience for me both personally and professionally to step outside of my comfort zone. I’ve always been a fan of Florida and was looking forward to skipping the harsh winters!
Describe your experience finding a place to live in Southwest Florida. What town do you currently live in?
I currently live in Fort Myers, FL, about 10 minutes away from Gartner. I had a very easy experience when it came to finding a home here. I googled a few places and would send them to my colleagues who already lived in the area. They would give me their opinion on the location and I would set up calls to the leasing office to discuss rent/amenities. Once I found a place that I liked, I sent a friend of mine in Fort Myers to take a look at it for me. I trusted his opinion, so once he gave me the green light I put a deposit down!
What is the weather like in Southwest Florida? What does the best day look like?
The weather down here is amazing. I love the beach, and laying out, so the hotter the better for me! When i first got down here, in September, the weather was still pretty humid from the summer but as the months went on it got cooler. Some mornings I would wake up and it would be in the high 50’s-60’s. Everyone who was from Florida thought it was freezing but I thought it was perfect! Now it is starting to get really warm, but the breeze feels nice. I enjoy the hot weather, my hair however might not feel the same.
Since moving here I’ve made it a point to get the most of my experience. I love food and have tried out many restaurants in the Fort Myers/Naples area. I joke all the time, saying that I could probably blog about my favorite place to get chicken wings. Fort Myers is actually a very historic place, which I didn’t know before coming down here. There are a lot of historic sites that you can visit, which have been extremely interesting. I’ve also taken an interest in kayaking which is something I have never done before. I’ve gone a few times since and when my friends from CT come to visit, I make sure they experience it as well!
Any advice for someone who’s considering relocating for an opportunity with Gartner?
Build strong friendships! They will be the folks who drag you out to dinner, the beach, and out to party! All of these memories I’ve created are only possible because of the people I’ve been able to share these experiences with!
The support down here has been amazing. I have a few people who were in the same shoes as me that moved down from the CT office, so we had a lot in common. Since being down here, I’ve made some really good friendships that I will take with me for a lifetime.
