Gartner Sponsors Two Toastmasters Speech Competition Winners

ToastmastersInternational2Senior Research Analyst, Joe Antelmi, and Research Content Specialist,
Greg Hirshorn, competed in the Toastmasters Area Level ‘Tall Tales’ and ‘International’ speech contests. Both Gartner employees took first place after delivering their speeches.

Joe is the Vice President of Education for our Gartner Stamford Toastmasters club and has been an active member in the group for four years. His speech in the competition focused on ‘Rhyming and Exaggeration’ of an important aspect in Joe’s life. Joe’s best advice when giving a speech for Toastmasters is “Don’t be afraid to fail, go up and give it your best shot and be okay with your best effort, everyone listening from Toastmasters is there to support and help you improve your speech by providing constructive feedback.”

Greg is one of the newer members from Gartner on the Research Engagement Services Team. He has been going to Toastmasters for only six months and is already on his sixth speech. He tries to do at least one speech every month in an effort to achieve the “Competent Communicator” certificate after his tenth speech by the end of this year. Greg’s speech in the competition focused on his life experiences and how he has developed strength through adversity. His advice for future speeches at Toastmasters includes: “Fear is natural, keep in mind the group you are performing in front of, they are open and supportive and want nothing more than to see you succeed.”

The purpose of Toastmasters is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
