A Day in the Life of an Analyst at Gartner IT Symposium XPO 2019 USA – Day 4 Oct 24 2019

6.01. Woke up and yes, as expected, felt tired. My Oura ring gave me the bad news:

Sleep score: 78 (down from 86 yesterday). Restlessness and a lower than normal resting heart rate suggest over tiredness and fitful sleep patterns. I can vouch for that!

6.20am Mused. Yes, average Brian activity seems up over yesterday.

I think this is due to several new ideas that are bouncing around in my head. Such as:

  • The Brightest are Coming. 4 times this week I was exploring best practices about data and analytics governance and the folks I was speaking with lept ahead to a more advanced question. I saw them think though implication of what I was suggesting, and they were applying it their situation and were able to see into their future and how the next step would evolve or emerge. It is refreshing and great news that this happened 4 times. In any normal week it rarely happens at all: everyone is so focused on their challenge right in front of them and any solution they can grab hold of. At a conference like this, so intense, I’d expect this observation perhaps once, maybe. This observation goes to the heart of the role and value we play as analysts: diffusing IP across the industry and helping everyone improve at what they do. It is such a fun and rewarding experience.
  • The definitive three rings. Due to the compressed way questions come at you while at Symposium, new ideas, thoughts and images blurred and re-formed. I concluded I could finally produce a toolkit with our definitive three rings advice; including the advanced stuff mentioned above.  New pictures and slides are in my head and being worked in slide-form already…
  • Connected Story-line. Already ‘data and analytics’ might be passé. AI and ML will be there soon enough. What is the business driven, data-infused, story-line for D&A beyond AI? Well, a recent idea we were exploring crystallized, so I crafted some material and sent it off to our team for review. Who knows, it might be useful…
