In a span of just a few weeks, there have been two “cool” networking acquisitions: Arkin by VMware and Appcito by A10. Both of these acquisitions should ultimately benefit the customers of all 4 companies.
Appcito was a Gartner cool vendor in 2015, offering a cloud-native ADC product which A10 now plans to use to better serve the needs of DevOps teams and cloud-native applications. Arkin was recently profiled as a cool vendor in 2016, and will help to address the overlay/underlay visibility challenges associated with NSX, and integrate into the VMware suite.
Besides Arkin and Appcito, other (relatively) recent networking acquisitions include Pertino (Cradlepoint), Ocedo (Riverbed), ConteXtream (HP), Embrane (Cisco). Moving forward, we anticipate additional and accelerated market consolidation (including m&a) in the networking space, as several companies founded during the software-defined hype-a-thon look for an exit.
In case you’re wondering, other cool vendors since 2014 include: Cumulus, Pica8, Plexxi, Anuta Networks Big Switch, CloudGenix, Viptela, VeloCloud, AppViewX, AVI Networks and Bridgeworks, and Versa. Side Note: Nuage Networks was a 2014 cool vendor as a subsidiary of ALu which was acquired by Nokia, and Tail -f was a 2014 cool vendor acquired by Cisco.
