Named Data Networking (NDN)

Named Data Networking (NDN) is a research project funded by NSF to define the architecture for the future Internet. NDN is conceptually simple, but radically changes the networking paradigms used by traditional protocols (SDN déjà vu anyone?). It is a move away from TCP/IP and instead of defining a system to transport data containers (IP packets)  between two hosts (identified by an IP address) through routers, NDN associates unique names (conceptually similar to URLs) to blocks of data, that can be stored, digitally signed and transmitted across nodes.

NDN is still in the research stage and is being driven by a consortium of academic institutions and the large networking players ( There are no commercial products yet, but open source implementations and some prototypes have been built by vendors. There is also a global test network, with nodes in North America, Asia and Europe.

The potential for NDN is huge, it can revolutionize the way we transport, process and store data, spurring a revolution in the networking industry. IPv6 and SDN could become obsolete before they become established (SDN, we hardly knew ye!). With NDN, the Internet would be very different and most of the issues we have today would disappear (but replaced with new ones, of course), but it would have a major impact also on devices and the software industry. Looking for NDN to appear on Gartner’s 2015 Enterprise Networking hype cycle…
