Requests for Proposals

by Whit Andrews  |  October 22, 2008  |  4 Comments

Especially if you’re working with a spreadsheet instead of a document. So I’m going to scribble notes here for a moment. I’m putting together a proposed RFP for enterprise search/information access technologies right now. It’s been something people [...]

Rumors Have It

by Whit Andrews  |  October 17, 2008  |  5 Comments

Here are the rumors I heard in the past week about Who’s Gonna Buy Whom in the current global financial mess, in my specific market, and what i think. THESE ARE ALL RUMORS. I don’t have any inside information, and if I did, I couldn’t share it with the likes of my readers, frankly — [...]

Caption contest!

by Whit Andrews  |  October 15, 2008  |  14 Comments

My colleagues have had great fun with this picture of me from the Fall Symposium Keynote (video here) (word cloud here). Some of the captions they suggested are below. Perhaps you have one of your own? “You know how to whistle, don’t you…” Andrews achieves a 32-foot watermelon seed spitting. “There is a cold front [...]

Mercado sorta gone now

by Whit Andrews  |  October 14, 2008  |  Comments Off

One of the things I do is keep a Google News Alert on my name — picked this Computerworld bit up just now. Egotistical? Efficient? Both, I think. I usually link to mentioned of me in the media and tag them “ink” on my personal blog. Is this ink? I just don’t know. Or this? [...]

by Whit Andrews  |  October 13, 2008  |  1 Comment

More to come on how I feel about word clouds, but I found a good use for them in generating a sort of edutaining graphic. This is a word cloud using the script for the analyst keynote at Gartner Symposium this week. (Thanks to Wordle.)

Apropos

by Whit Andrews  |  October 6, 2008  |  2 Comments

In my last post, I noted that I’m starting to use an application at The New York Times (actually, The New York Times is an application to me now) to share what i read. I mentioned to them – and they said they agree, and are working on it – that context is REALLY important [...]

Read Over My Shoulder

by Whit Andrews  |  October 1, 2008  |  2 Comments

There was a time when I was a street reporter, and at that time, I used to get in trouble for reading the Times Metro. What “Times Metro,” you ask? The New York Times, Metropolitan Edition, I answer. My close friend Alex Wright — who never intended to work in journalism, I don’t think, unless [...]
