My son and an opponent chasing a soccer ball

My son and an opponent chasing a soccer ball

Like many Dads, I am delighted that digital makes artists of us all. I looked at this picture this morning with my son — he’s wearing the burgundy shirt — and I told him it’s my favorite picture from yesterday. We talked about why (it has some nice stylistic touches that I lucked into) and he said, the reason he likes it is he can see that he knows he’s going to get the ball.

Now as a grown-up, I know nothing could be further from the truth. No one knows who’s going to get the ball. In fact, another picture in the series from yesterday is, in fact, a misleading image. It looks like my son just scored a goal, but in fact I remember the goal, and it was a different kid.

I think what I like best about this picture is its simplicity and clarity. And what it leads me to — why you’re seeing this on a company blog instead of a personal blog, which I also have one of  — is that I like the riddle of which kid it’s more fun to be. Is it more fun to be in the lead or not yet in the lead? Is it more fun to be almost at the ball or to be the kid who has the chance?
