Are Western Companies Going to Miss out on Lucrative Data Center Business in India?
The growth of core infrastructure in India over the next 10 years will result in a substantial build out of critical data center facilities in both metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore etc but also in remote regions. Over the last few weeks, I have met almost 20 organisations looking to build new data centers here and whats really interesting is that whilst, some Indian companies are using internationally established design standards and tools, many are not. Moreover, local technical, environmental and financial issues means that these global designs need to be modified.
The feedback from many clients is that the international IT vendors operating in this region do not fully understand the local and specific needs of the Indian customer. My advise to these companies is to ‘get local’ or you may miss out on business. In fact my recent research note highlights the issues

What does it take for a seasoned infrastructure guy to start blogging?
When he spends 3 fantastic hours advising a client on how to build a state of the art, energy efficient data center in India only to have a power outage to his flat for next 2 hours!
This is just one example of the paradox of living with technology in India.
What is also fascinating is seeing the massive roll out of new core infrastructure here in India and the dramatic impact it’s havening upon the life of the average citizen. The pace of change is phenomenal and the level of innovation is pretty amazing. But then it needs to be because there are some significant problems that need to be overcome. Things like guaranteeing a clean supply of electricity and dealing with water seepage into concrete structures. And perhaps the problem that is least well understood by western IT companies is the public and private sector driven need for a shared financial risk model especially when it comes to developing data enter and cloud infrastructure. (More about this later)
Whatever the issues, the Government led roll out of core infrastructure across the whole sub continent is an important factor in the countries social and economic development. And the really interesting thing: seeing the almost immediate impact of new technology roll out on the lives of over a billion people. The ability to receive internet TV, payment of household bills through handheld devices and the proliferation in the use of social networking sites are all changing people’s lives. And behind it all is the multi trillion dollar infrastructure roll out. As research note India’s Infrastructure Investment Will Fuel Enterprise IT Spending (27 August 2010 | ID:G0020562) shows, much of this impacts IT.
And there are other paradoxes. In a country where energy supply often fails (yesterday my flat was without power for almost 4 hours), there is a huge investment in solar power. Over $200m dollars of private equity funding has gone into a dozen start ups in the area. The Government has introduced car emission controls that are more stringent than the UK and just about all new data centers are competing to introduce ‘green’ initiatives.
These are just some of the reason why data centers (in India) are becoming cool – environmentally, financially and technically. And that’s why an infrastructure guy is excited about writing about them.
