I’m off to Germany tonight for a few days to attend Nokia World in Stuttgart so I’ll try to post some comments on some of the announcements and devices I see there. In the meantime a few thoughts on events of the last few days.
The EU invests EUR 18M in LTE-A. A few days ago [...]

How far can Palm shrink before they vanish?
August 28th, 2009 · 2 Comments
Strange happenings at Palm in Asia. Palm appear to be radically shrinking their international presence but trying not to mention it. They closed a lot of EU offices back in January to consolidate their EU presence into the UK. And now we hear from sources in Asia Pacific that they are closing the offices there [...]

Confusion that even a great meal doesn’t dispel
August 27th, 2009 · No Comments
One of the advantages of living in the South of England is that it’s easy to get to the Channel Tunnel. This means the collection of restaurants I can drive to within 2 or 3 hours isn’t limited to ones in the UK. I’m theoretically on vacation this week so yesterday we went to France [...]

Nokia needs more than a netbook
August 24th, 2009 · 7 Comments
Nokia just announced a netbook called Booklet 3G. Back in June I blogged about this possibility, and said then that I wasn’t too impressed with the idea. This is the assumption that consumers like us will want to watch similar content on our TV, PC and mobile phone. I can see why network operators and media companies love the idea because it would be so [...]

August 17th, 2009 · No Comments
It’s Monday so it must be Warsaw. I’m off on a business trip to Poland and Germany this week, so blogging may be a bit intermittent. I will be giving a couple of presentations on mobile and wireless trends tomorrow in Warsaw, so if you’re a Gartner client in Poland and haven’t signed up yet, [...]

Do you need a green handset?
August 15th, 2009 · No Comments
My colleague Simon Mingay who leads our green IT and environmental sustainability research sent me this link to yet another article on “green” mobiles. Let me say up front that I totally support the idea of putting less bad stuff into the environment, whether the bad stuff is CO2 or polluting chemicals. But I am [...]

Mobile ads and mobile snooping
August 14th, 2009 · 2 Comments
30 billion mobile ad impressions a month. Mobile advertising is exploding, a mobiThinking blog reports recent estimates that the number of mobile advertisements served every month globally is around 30 billion. That’s several ad impressions per subscriber per month across the world. I’m sure most of us ignore mobile ads because they’re not relevant, and [...]
