Oracle buys Sun – this will impact the mobile industry

April 20th, 2009 · 11 Comments

The Oracle announcements talked a lot about Solaris, integrated systems including hardware and software, and enterprise opportunities but not much about mobility. This may be significant because Oracle’s relationship with mobile has been a bit lightweight in the past. But this acquisition could have significant implications for the mobile world. It raises lots of interesting questions such as: Will Oracle exercise the same sort of stewardship of Java ME and LWUIT as Sun did? What happens to the delivery of open source PhoneME and LWUIT releases in 2009? What happens to the JVM business? Will Oracle’s hard-hearted accountants want to retain the more speculative projects such as JavaFX?. What happens to the Netbeans tools?

We’re working on the answers to these questions and more, and will be writing several research pieces on the acquisition over the next few days. If in the meantime you’re a client and need information in a hurry then call us.

Sun had no hope of survival by the late 1990s when McNeely Locked-in on selling “boxes” and stopped listening to the marketplace. Sun created huge value with Solaris and Java, but had no idea how to capture that value so it just kept doing what it always did. Eventually, the market didn’t see the value in the boxes any more, and the value of Solaris and Java had been frittered away. A lesson for any company that it must adapt to market needs or it will be squashed. Read more at http://WWW.ThePhoenixPrinciple.com

    I think
    - Netbeans will disappear. Instead of Netbeans, eclipse will be used more widely.
    - JavaFX will be new weapon of Oracle.
Oracle will rush into mobile market with JavaFX.
    - Mobile database will get new momentum.
Especially, mobile interoperability with enterprise DB will be key point.
Java-based mobile database APIs will make developers comfortable.

actually it was a surprise to me this news, but i think it will be great, and will give more power to sun,

A thought on the points made by dolphin and knocket. Tools like JavaFX could be a new weapon for Oracle, and Oracle could indeed start making a bigger impact on the mobile market. But one thing that concerns me is – who in Oracle will do this? To be honest I don’t think Oracle has had a very strong internal mobile strategy, and has even less experience of the wider mobile market, consumer devices, dealing with operators and so on. So one question in my mind is this: does Oracle have anyone who can exploit the mobile assets they have just acquired? Or maybe Oracle will have to go hire a mobile industry heavyweight to do this.
