I smell the "Long Tail" here. The masses (statistically) may read the most popular blogs but innovation will continue on the fringe (or in the tail - for consistency with my lead sentence). Without the long tail there will be little to no innovation.

I am reminded of the Wired "digerati." There never WAS a blogosphere -- there are a lot of people reading, thinking and sharing in mutable Web sites and other means of Web presence. It's like saying that The Kraken is dead. The fact that octopuses, giant squids and coelacanths live on is ignored in favor of the destruction of an impactless straw man. (I guess I shouldn't have spent so much money at Costco in the metaphor aisle yesterday.)
