The Long Tail, by definition, is made up primarily of highlt discretionary items. Discretionary spending has been hammered in this downturn. that serves to shorten the Long Tail, but it doesn't disprove the basic insight. The length of the Tail will expand and contract with the economy, but will continue to be populated by a wide range of discretionary, niche products that will collectively account for a significant portion of consumer spending, but that will be difficult for any one or group of retailers, ecommerce or otherwise, to take a disproportionate share.
