by Mark P. McDonald  |  October 16, 2012  |  1 Comment

A significant uptick in dissatisfaction with service providers is one of the trends I have noticed in the last six months.  Many CIOs are either actively switching service providers, in the evaluation process of switching or questioning the skills and abilities of their service provider as a significant issue hampering their success. The Geek Debt Crisis

by Mark P. McDonald  |  July 2, 2012  |  5 Comments

While Europe finance ministers deal with national debt crisis, CIO’s and CFO’s are ignoring their organizational geek debt crisis.  Measure your organization’s geek debt by the degree to which existing systems, operations, and capabilities limit future potential.  We often think and call our existing systems in more noble terms – legacy.  But in reality it [...]

The sources of distortion

by Mark P. McDonald  |  January 12, 2012  |  Submit a Comment

Amplifying the enterprise involves turning up the value of technology in the enterprise.  Eliminating distortion is one of the ways that technology amplifies the enterprise. Distortion refers to the internal complexities; costs, duplication and redundancies that make it harder to get work done. Think about the things that get in the way, make it difficult [...]

Maximize IT returns by amplifying performance rather than administering a budget.

by Mark P. McDonald  |  January 9, 2012  |  1 Comment

In times of economic adversity, conventional wisdom calls for conserving cash and capital.  Firms have amassed record amounts of cash as governments face deep cuts in the fourth year of five-year plans.  Leaders know that the future requires re-imaging the enterprise rather than repeated waves of belt tightening. Nowhere is this more evident than in [...]

A ‘both – and’ strategy is has no imagination only more work

by Mark P. McDonald  |  July 7, 2011  |  2 Comments

One of the reasons CIOs face the need to re-imagine IT is that most companies are pursuing a dual track strategy calling for growth and cost cutting.  These two goals are often seen as being mutually exclusive – creating a duel rather than a dual set of requirements. You are either supporting growth or you [...]

Last week, the government announced that it had plans to close 137 data centers out of the 2,094 they currently operate.  The 137 data centers are the first wave of a play to close 800 data centers by 2015 with a projected savings of $3 billion dollars. Looking to raise revenue requires getting everyone in everyone else’s business

by Mark P. McDonald  |  November 5, 2010  |  2 Comments

Raising revenues is harder than cutting cost, which is one reason executives favor cost cutting.  Most think that raising revenue is hard because it requires turning prospects into customers and having them spend more with you.  That is true.  But.  The quest for revenue is hard because it carries with it greater internal disruption, finger [...]

Is 2010 a replay of 2009?

by Mark P. McDonald  |  March 24, 2010  |  Submit a Comment

I hope not, but this idea has recently gotten some attention in the IT media.  People are looking for some theme for this year.  They are trying to make sense of an economy that seems to be going in every direction at once. Saying that this year is a repeat of last year neither sets [...]
