Considering the budget cuts facing CIOs in Germany, it is not surprising to find most successful individuals fulfilling this role with an equally good understanding of economics as they do of technology. The dilemma seems insurmountable to meet the budget cuts sometimes demanded by the economic climate as well as the increase in services required to be successful in that same environment.
When it comes to information management (IM), part of the key to overcoming this dilemma lies in exacting a higher Return on Information. Based on a survey carried out in 2008 by Gartner in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with 78 CIOs, the top 3 stated priorities in 2009 were 1) improving business processes, 2) cutting enterprise costs and 3) expanding into new markets or geographies. What is often overlooked or underestimated is the extent to which the right IM strategy can contribute tangibly and directly to each of these priorities. In fact, while the first two are affected positively by the provision of the right information at the right time to employees, it is perhaps Web content management that can most greatly facilitate the effective and profitable expansion of the business into new markets and geographies.
Infrastructure is critically important as is the technology on which efficient operations are based. However, it is equally vital to the success of an organization that the CIO regard information as a resource that can be further enriched, a means to render processes more effective and, most importantly, an investment on which a return can be exacted. Particularly in times of economic difficulty, it is an absolute necessity to ensure the role and value of information in the organization earn the right focus in the agenda of the successful CIO. After all, information is the CIOs middle name.
