Citi Mobile Trial Success Exaggerated

by Kristin Moyer  |  March 18, 2010  |  Comments Off

Citi recently completed a mobile payments trial in India that has received a lot of press.  The trial was a 6 month Tap and Pay project that involved 250 merchants in Bengaluru.   Most of the articles I’ve read on this trial are saying it was wildly successful.  I did some math to see if this [...]

BAI Payments Connect – Day Three

by Kristin Moyer  |  March 10, 2010  |  Comments Off

On day three at BAI Payments Connect, I attended a session about competing for deposits and relationships in turbulent times.  A couple things about this session stood out to me. Data shows that many US banks are waiting to innovate depending on what happens with regulatory change.  What bothered me about this the most is [...]

by Kristin Moyer  |  March 3, 2010  |  Comments Off

The keynote for day two at BAI Payments Connect was given by Dominic Venturo of US Bank, and was focused on innovation (“A Willingness to Try New Things”).  US Bank has a dedicated team for emerging technologies and markets that develops, pilots and refines product innovation.  One of the interesting things this team does is [...]

Contactless is Not About Marketing

by Kristin Moyer  |  January 22, 2010  |  2 Comments

I read an article this morning that discussed the low interest of consumers in contactless (see “Contactless Cards Go Untouched”).  Consumers are rather uninterested in contactless, with 39% of consumers in one study saying they are unlikely to use contactless and 43% saying they are neutral.  Analysts commenting on the results of this study said [...]

Malicious Android App

by Kristin Moyer  |  January 12, 2010  |  1 Comment

Alistair Newton and Kristin Moyer here.  “First Tech Credit Union has warned that a malicious application designed to steal banking details has made its way onto Google’s Android Market (see here).” What is interesting about this is not so much the fact that it’s a virus on the phone, or that it’s attacking the mobile [...]

Christophe Uzureau here – The changeover to 2010 has left many German cardholders unable to use their cards at ATMs and POS. ZYNC – Right Idea, but Wrong Approach

by Kristin Moyer  |  January 6, 2010  |  Comments Off

Last summer I wrote about the importance of segmentation in banking (see here).  Alistair Newton and I have also written about the value of letting customers create their own cards and manage them, for example changing rewards options, over time (Gartner clients see “Using Social Networking and Personalization to Transform Your Payment Card Market Approach”). [...]

Banks Need to Change Their Approach to Contactless Payments

by Kristin Moyer  |  December 18, 2009  |  Comments Off

Contactless retail payment is often referred to as a “revolutionary technology” for the payment industry; however, this view is misplaced. It represents an opportunity for some consumers to substitute the use of a payment card for a normal cash transaction and, in certain circumstances, may offer added convenience to the consumer — for example, where [...]

PayPal as a Friend Rather than a Foe (Good Idea)

by Kristin Moyer  |  November 6, 2009  |  Comments Off

Some IT vendors and banks are starting to think of PayPal and other non-bank providers as a friend rather than a foe. This is a good idea, and one which we have proposed 2 years now in our research (Gartner client access only): • PayPal and Google Checkout Show the Way for Banks’ Payment Operations [...]

From Orlando to Cannes: Banking in Video and Audio

by Kristin Moyer  |  October 26, 2009  |  Comments Off

From Peter Redshaw.  I’m just back from the hugely successful Gartner Symposium in Orlando, USA, so now I have only the one week to help make final preparations for its sister event in Cannes, France! Orlando provided lots of evidence that confidence in the IT industry is starting to grow again and the banking and [...]
