Cool Vendors in Application Performance Monitoring - http://www.gartner.com/resId=1990115
I’m happy to announce that Will Cappelli and I have started a new cool vendor note to accompany the 65 regularly published notes which are done yearly throughput Gartner. These research notes are fun to write and cover interesting innovative smaller technology companies to keep an eye on. Looking at the past cool vendors we have highlighted there are some phenomenal examples of companies which started small, were pointed out and grew up and were purchased or went public. Some of these which are in the monitoring space include:
AVIcode – 2004 (Now Microsoft SCOM’s APM solution)
AppDynamics – 2010 (Now a very high growth company)
Aternity – 2008 (One of the premiere endpoint EUM technology providers)
Correlsense – 2009 (Pioneering tracing of non-java applications)
Hyper9 – 2009 (Solarwinds virtualization monitoring offering)
Hyperic – 2009 (VMware’s APM and monitoring technology)
Neptuny – 2009 (Now BMC’s capacity planning technology)
New Relic – 2009 (High growth APM company, pioneering self service and SaaS APM)
Optier – 2006 (Named a leader in the APM magic quadrant for 2011)
Spiceworks – 2008 (Pioneer of new business models for SMB IT software)
Splunk – 2006 (IPOed this week, please see my upcoming blog post)
VMTurbo – 2011 (High growth virtualization monitoring and optimization technology)
We felt that with all of the innovation, new companies, and interesting approaches to solving APM problems that it waarented research to cover these. This year we covered 4 companies:
AppFirst – www.appfirst.com
BlueStripe – www.bluestripe.com
Lucierna – www.lucierna.com
MoogSoft - moogsoft.wordpress.com
Congratulations to these companies, and we look forward to watching and helping you succeed. Please note that many of these vendors selected in this research and in past research are not clients. There is no involvement in which companies we advise, and which companies are doing impressive things to solve problems which we hear from clients.

I was excited to see the recent news that Gartner analysts Jonah Kowall and Will Cappelli will be writing regular “cool vendor notes.” They offer great insight into the emerging players in our industry. This also marks the moment when companies begin to grow up:

Hi Jonah,
I found your information to be very good and I am a longtime proponent of Gartner. My business focuses on Application and Network Performance Management and I have relationships with about 100 APM and NPM vendors. I am interested in understanding what you are watching for in the market. Perhaps we could have a call to see if my research could help you and vice versa. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Kevin

Kevin, if you want to discuss being a client feel free to contact the sales organization. We normally obtain information directly from end user clients and vendors. Additionally I get information by collaborating with my peers who cover these markets.
