Profile

I’ve been working in computer, network and information security for 30 years. From the University of Connecticut I went directly to the National Security Agency and then to the US Secret Service, working in secure communications and surveillance equipment in both places. I left the government and spent 11 years with GTE, which some of you may remember was once a very big telephone company. I then ran consulting groups at TIS (at the start of the firewall market) and Entrust (at the start of the PKI market.) I’ve been at Gartner since 1999 and seen our security group expand to where we now have about 30 analysts covering information security.

My 2009 New Year’s resolution is to spend less time in front of a computer, which means outside of work I will spending more time hiking, biking, kayaking and playing around on ham radio (K3TN.) I had been doing a private blog (http://security.typepad.com) on my outdoor exploits, but that turned out to just be more time spent in front of the computer so it has gone dormant and my blogging energies are spent here.
