John PescatoreComcast announced that its Internet service customers would get free “Constant Guard Security Program” features, which basically means McAfee software for their desktops and a Comcast browser toolbar that ties in anti-spyware and phishing alerting from CA.
Now, this is better than Comcast doing nothing, but it basically means Comcast will carry the malware all the way to their customers PCs and then make it easier for those infected customers to fix their now dangerous PCs. I would have liked this announcement a whole lot better if Comcast also announced how part of Constant Guard was a investment in Comcast’s ability to detect and filter a much higher percentage of malware before it gets to their customers.
Not pretending any carrier could stop everything – but, as I said here, in the real world quality improvements come from pushing quality upstream, not by removing defects downstream.
