Thanks for Thursday: Hats Off to the FTC

I love the FTC. It is an independent agency founded way back in 1914. It seems like regardless of who is president or what the state of the economy is, the FTC stays focused on its mission of consumer protection. The FTC doesn’t seem to need new laws or more money, it just keeps fighting for its customers.

The FTC recently issued guidance (apparently driven by requirements in the ARRA stimulus bill) detailing the reporting responsibilities of businesses who expose personal health information – look here. Man, the FTC works fast – we are about 15 years into HIPPA and it barely has any teeth at all. Even more unusual – they created a 1 page form for reporting!! While there will be all kinds of backlash from the usual parties, this is a good thing to see.
