This Weeks Cyberattacks: The Targets Are Interesting, The Attacks Not So Much

July 9th, 2009 · No Comments

With North Korea lobbing missiles left and right, cyber attacks that are coming from compromised PCs in Korea and are targeting many US and South Korean targets have sure captured the interest of the press. However, the Wall Street Journal reports that Ahnlabs analysis of the threat code shows that it is not particularly sophisticated and the scope of the DDoS attack isn’t even that large.

What you notice immediately is that many sites noticed the attack and mitigate the impact quickly, while many others were taken down or disconnected and stay off the air. It is sort of like when Consumer Reports does crash testing: in well-built cars the crash dummies just have some aching ribs, while in poorly-built cars the dummies are turned into spare dummie parts.

It’s just weather on the Internet folks – if you go out in the rain without an umbrella, and look up with your mouth wide open, oh what a turkey you are. Imagine if the guy who runs the data center said “oh, we don’t need power conditioning or power back-up – the electricity is very reliable.”
