Day One: Gartner Information Security Summit

June 29th, 2009 · No Comments

0600 – Leave home to drive to conference at Gaylord Hotel in Washington DC (actually Maryland)

0700 – Get to analyst work room, find schedule, go to main hall to get set up for my planned “intervention” during Chris Byrne’s keynote speech

0800 – 0900 – Keynote activities

0900 – 1000 – One on one meetings

1000 – 1100 – Phone calls

1100 – 1200 – Touring the vendor exhibits

1200 – 1300 – Phone calls

1330 – 1500 – Giving a talk on threats

1500 – 1630 – One on one meetings

1630 – 1730 – Phone calls

1730 – 1830 – Giving a talk with Lawrence Orans on 4 new network security technologies

1830 – 2000 – Touring vendor showcase and talking with Gartner clients

2000 – 2100 – Driving home

2130 – 2200 – Pulling some slides together for the often rescheduled/reworked keynote session coming on Wednesday about national cybersecurity strategy

A busy day, but these things always point out how much more bandwidth there is in face to face communications over any and all alternatives. Lots of conference buzz about security as a service, cloud this and that – one 5 minute f2f talk about the real security issues can get things across that take hours on phone calls or days on email.
