Last year was fantastic for BPM. The benefits were solid and organizations committed more to improving their processes with BPM. Last year flew by very fast and the action was intense in the BPM sector. BPM continues to grow but the impact has expanded. I’d like to share my thoughts on 2010 and say I expect greater things in 2011. I expect BPM benefits to continue to flow and reach new audiences.
I thought I would list my Top Ten BPM list for 2010:
- BPM is now reaching for a more strategic set of benefits by taking on larger scoped projects delivering bigger benefits than before
- Solution providers are lining up to provide intellectual property(IP) for process activity while filling the BPM skills gap.
- Pre-packaged IP is being sold heavily to accelerate BPM impact (process and policy/rule templates)
- BPM is now being aggressively taken up by the followers and fast followers. It’s not just for the leaders any more.
- There are a number of case studies including advanced uses of BPM agility guided by linked rules and events
- Social BPM (unstructured processes) that leverage knowledge sources are starting to roll out.
- Process Intelligence that helps hone process behavior is starting to emerge and reaching full gallop in 2011.
- Processes in the cloud are starting to emerge particularly for collaborating on process definition and proof of concept activities.
- There are several vendors exhibiting spectacular growth rates (north of 60%) even with the power vendors making an impact.
- BPM is enabling greater leverage of existing application / package portfolios

I would like to add my observations on 2010, there has been a lot of interest in BPM in new markets around the world. I believe this is due to number 6 on your list, Social BPM. The working culture in many parts of the world is less structured than experienced in the West making this type of BPM more relevant and easier to implement.
