The Triple Threat of Process Intelligence

by Jim Sinur  |  August 5, 2010  |  3 Comments

In a previous posting I tried show that process intelligence(PI) is different than business intelligence(BI) and has different but parallel outcomes.See http://blogs.gartner.com/jim_sinur/2010/07/21/process-intelligence-and-business-intelligence-do-they-share-more-than-word/

In my last posting I tried to show that PI is about adjusting to now and quickly pointing out ways to improve operational performance to keep organizations going in today’s troubled waters for the future as well..See.http://blogs.gartner.com/jim_sinur/2010/07/28/process-intelligence-is-about-operational-action/

In this posting, I’d like to show the three major areas for organizations to focus on for proven benefits. I have seen success in all three in my client base.

Finding Better Practices with Defined Processes:

Organizations can find out how to properly set rules and behaviors in  the context of modeled and structured process driving for operational excellence. This may mean balancing process resources, determining escalation rules, finding ways to reduce the number of exceptions or setting tolerances at the proper level to optimize profits. This is a rich vein of activity.

Finding Opportunities within the Process Context::

The problem with BPM is that seems a bit self focused and seems aimed at the activity within it’s confines and modeled flows. Organizations are growing to watch for interesting events that revolve around the processes to look for looming opportunities and threats. Paying attention to process context and significant events, allows for process managers to stay ahead of the unfolding trends.

Finding Desirable Behavior in Social BPM::

By watching the collaborative portions within processes or the behavior in evolving collaborations allows organizations to find evolving better practices in the way people and systems collaborate. In some cases the the reality of what is really happening points to opportunities to advice people to collaborate in successful ways by showing successful patterns.

Bottom Line: PI has great potential for revenue opportunities and savings in changing and dynamic organizations and value chains.
